Septic services in Lafayette, TN cover two kinds of homes. Homes on the city sewer drain to lines and a treatment plant that the City of Lafayette runs itself. Out in the county's hills, many homes and farms have their own septic tank and drain field. When a drain backs up, that split decides where our crew looks first.

Lafayette is the county seat of Macon County, and the City of Lafayette dates to 1843. The 2020 Census counted 5,584 people in the city and 25,216 in the county. Red Boiling Springs, the county's second-largest city, had 1,205 people and once thrived as a mineral springs resort. Macon County had no railroad and stayed mostly isolated until Highway 52 was cut through.
A home on the city sewer drains through a pipe under the yard to the city's collection lines. The city's sewer department runs those collection lines and its own wastewater treatment plant. Tree roots or a cracked joint in the pipe from the house can make toilets gurgle and tubs drain slowly. Before any digging, we can run a sewer camera inspection to see inside the line.
A clog gets drain cleaning, and a broken or sunken section gets sewer line repair. Our crew does its own digging, and we saw and patch the asphalt where a line crosses a road.
The Lafayette and Macon County area is rural, and its economy leans mainly on farming. Lafayette sits near the center of the county, on the northern Highland Rim. The county is generally rugged and hilly, and geographically it is part of Kentucky's Pennyroyal Plateau.
Lafayette also straddles a divide between the Barren River and Cumberland River drainages. Streams on the town's northeast side, Town Creek among them, drain toward the Barren. On Macon County's hills, getting our compact track loader and small excavator to a tank or a field takes planning. We check the slope and the access before we quote.
When a field fails or stays saturated, drain field repair rebuilds the gravel and fabric trenches or lays new ones. At the tank, our septic repair work covers worn pumps, floats, alarm parts, baffles and broken lines. If the lids are buried, septic tank risers bring them to ground level. For new builds and replacements, septic tank installation means a precast concrete tank set by boom truck.
The Macon County Codes Office issues all building permits for the county and inspects new construction. Building permits inside the City of Lafayette come from that county office too. Septic is different: the county says septic permits and septic issues are handled by the State Division of Water Resources.
For Macon County, that state work goes through the Cookeville field office of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. A property owner with a faulty system must get a Septic System Construction Permit for the repair. There is no fee for that repair permit. Plan ahead, because the state can take up to 45 days once it has a complete application.
In Macon County, the property owner gets that permit, so start on it early. For the full process, read how septic permits work in Tennessee.
Buying a home on septic around Lafayette? Start with the paperwork. Macon County's codes page points owners to the state's online search for septic files. Look up the file before a purchase or a repair, so you know what the state has on record.
Next, a septic inspection tells you how the system is doing today. We uncover the tank lids, check the liquid level and baffles, and test any pump, float or alarm.
