Septic services in Hartsville, TN often mean farm country. Farms and livestock ranches take up most of the land in Trousdale County. A home off the public sewer sends everything to a septic tank and a drain field. When a failing field needs a state repair permit, that file goes to Cookeville instead of Nashville.

Hartsville is the county seat of Trousdale County, and the two share one consolidated city-county government. The 2020 Census counted 11,615 people for Hartsville/Trousdale County as a whole. Trousdale is Tennessee's smallest county by area. Hartsville is its only town, and Beech Grove and Shady Grove are its unincorporated communities.
Hartsville sits just north of the Cumberland River, about fifty miles northeast of Nashville. It lies where State Route 25 meets State Route 141. State Route 25 runs west into Sumner County and southeast to Carthage. State Route 141 runs south to Lebanon and north into Macon County.
Public water and sewer service comes from Hartsville/Trousdale Water and Sewer, which serves more than 3,000 customers across the county. A home that is not tied into its sewer relies on a septic tank and a drain field. We work on both kinds of homes: septic systems on one side and sewer lines on the other.
Tennessee septic permits come from the state's Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), through its Division of Water Resources. Closer to our base, Robertson and Sumner counties go through TDEC's Nashville Environmental Field Office. Trousdale County is different. Its Division of Water Resources work, septic permits included, runs through the Cookeville Environmental Field Office.
The Nashville office still lists Trousdale County for its other programs. Beside the county's name, it notes that Division of Water Resources work is served by the Cookeville office. Cookeville also covers Macon and Smith counties, which border Trousdale to the north and east.
The state's septic permit fee list covers new systems and repairs. A repair permit carries no permit fee. TDEC says processing can take up to 45 days from a complete application. Our Tennessee septic permit guide covers the steps before a septic tank installation.
Hartsville's business district sits along the West Fork of Goose Creek. The creek flows in from the hills to the north. Several miles south, it empties into Old Hickory Lake on the Cumberland River. A large hill rises just west of the business district and overlooks the eastern half of the county.
A drain field has to soak up everything that leaves the tank, and extra water slows that work. The EPA says to keep roof drains, sump pumps and other rainwater drainage away from the field. It also says not to park or drive on a drain field, so farm trucks and equipment belong somewhere else.
When a field fails, drain field repair means rebuilding the gravel and fabric trenches or digging new ones. Some problems start at the tank instead. Septic repair covers pumps, floats, alarms and control panels, baffles, lids and broken lines. Septic tank risers bring buried lids up to ground level for the next pumping.
Homes on the public sewer still have a sewer line that runs from the house out to the main. When that line cracks or fills with roots, drains slow down and gurgle. The lowest drain in the house usually backs up first. A sewer camera inspection shows what is in the pipe before anyone digs.
A cracked or sagging section calls for sewer line repair, and our crew digs it out and replaces it. We run our own excavation with a compact track loader and a small excavator. When a line crosses a road, we saw the asphalt, set the new pipe and patch the road ourselves.
Buying or selling a Hartsville home on septic? A septic inspection shows the condition of the tank and the drain field before closing. We locate the tank, open the lids and check the levels, the baffles and any pump or alarm.
